Give your baby a Bright Beginning

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time in life — it can also be a bit frightening. Every woman's experience is different. Our Bright Beginnings classes can help explain the challenges and changes of pregnancy so Mom and baby can stay as healthy as possible.

"Every mom-to-be should take these classes," says Laura Picou, director of Women's Services at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC). "Moms who participate in Bright Beginnings know what to expect, they're more calm, they know the right questions to ask, and they really seem to enjoy the experience of becoming a mom."

TGMC's new childbirth educator, Kellie Brunet, RN, teaches each class, and Mom's partner or support person is encouraged to participate.

For registration or more information about TGMC's prenatal and childbirth services, call 985-873-4616 or 1-888-543-TGMC.

Prepared Childbirth: This comprehensive class is open to first-time mothers, fathers and anyone who wants to know more about prenatal exercise, Lamaze breathing techniques, medication options and more. The final class includes a helpful tour of the hospital. Note: Pillows and blankets are needed for floor and breathing exercises.

Teen Prepared Childbirth: Young mothers have special concerns about pregnancy. This class, designed for age 19 and younger, offers information about exercise, Lamaze breathing techniques, baby care and more. Teens 18 or 19 have the option of participating in the adult Prepared Childbirth class.

Sibling Class: Children ages 2-10 will enjoy this entertaining and informative one-session class that helps ease the transition for siblings when the new baby arrives. Topics include jealousy, delivery and newborn care. (Parents may review the information in written form before the class.)

Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding is a healthy option for mothers and their babies. This two-hour class covers topics such as changes to the breasts during pregnancy, feeding techniques, breast pumps and solutions to common problems.

"Mommy and Me" New Mother Support Group: Get Mom out of the house for some quality time in a caring environment with others who are having similar experiences. The support group encourages mothers to share their concerns and experiences during baby's first year. A nurse and a social worker are available at each meeting to help. Babies are welcomed!

Infant Massage: Infant massage provides many health benefits. In this class, held at TGMC's OutReach Center, you will learn how to massage your baby to reduce stress, treat colic, induce sleep and promote a parent/infant bond through touch. This class should be scheduled after baby's arrival.

Hospital Discharge: All of our new in-patient mothers are treated to this class just prior to leaving the hospital. Topics emphasize basic baby care at home.
