Disillusioned about your New Year's resolution?

Five ways to rekindle
your commitment to
a healthier you!

You started out so well. On New Year's Eve a resolution was made to start walking every day, get a full night's sleep and avoid the ice cream aisle. You began to feel great!

Then you started to slip: eating all of that king cake during carnival season and missing walks because you had to work late. Now you feel terrible.

Well, don't give up. Here are five tips that can help you get back on track — and stay there!

1. Learn from past mistakes
Figure out why your resolution didn't stick and develop new coping strategies.

Example: Plan A was to simply resist smoking a cigarette after dinner. It didn't work.
Plan B
might be to take a walk as soon as you're finished eating and to keep cigarettes out of sight to avoid temptation.

Action item: Learn about smoking-cessation programs available at Terrebonne General Medical Center. Call (985) 853-1555 for information.

2. Choose your battles
Rather than trying to do everything at once, set yourself up for success by picking one important goal. When you've achieved that one, add another.

Example: You've quit smoking. Now, it's time to focus on sleeping eight hours every night.

Action item: If you have trouble sleeping, the problem may be sleep apnea. Our Center for Sleep Studies is experienced in diagnosing and treating sleep apnea. For information, please call (985) 873-3678.

3. Look at the short term
Nothing succeeds like success, so think of an easy short-term goal.

Example: Your long-term goal is to jog five miles; your short-term goal is to walk one mile.

Action item: Call our OutReach center at (985) 876-7577 and join the OutReach Opportunity Club to become a Mile Walker. Walk with us in the comfort of Southland Mall!

4. Be more specific
Be clear about your goal and how you plan to reach it.

Example: "I'm going to lose weight" is not specific. "I'm going to lose 20 pounds" is specific. "I'm going to lose 20 pounds by walking 30 minutes every morning, limiting myself to two desserts a week and joining a weight-loss support group" is more specific.

Action item: Call our OutReach Center at (985) 876-7577 and ask about The Weigh To Go, TGMC's group weight-loss program.

5. Send out an SOS
Resolutions involving weight loss, nutrition, exercise and smoking cessation should start with your family doctor. The proper guidance can help ensure that your good intentions result in safe benefits.
