Terrebonne General Names Phyllis Peoples President and CEO

Date released: 4/23/2003

The Board of Commissioners of TGMC has unanimously approved hospital Chief Operating Officer Phyllis Peoples as the facility’s new President and Chief Executive Officer.

With more than 18 years of healthcare delivery and administration experience, Peoples joined the staff of TGMC in 1995. Mrs. Peoples’ professional path, which has included work as a critical care staff nurse, ambulatory services care product manager, clinical educator, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Senior Vice President of Clinical Services, gives her deep insight into the total picture of healthcare delivery and the management of people and financial resources. In her current post as COO, Mrs. Peoples is accountable for over 1100 employees and 92% of the hospital’s gross revenues. Mrs. Peoples will assume her post May 1st. She succeeds current President and CEO Jay Macfarland who announced his resignation in early March.

According to Board Chairman Mike Voisin, it was Peoples’ “broad experience in healthcare and her history of leadership at the hospital that made her the obvious and best choice for the future of Terrebonne General.” He continued, “Phyllis has demonstrated the kind of qualities sought by nearly every hospital in America. We are very fortunate to have found such an outstanding person to fill this position right here at home.”

Board Vice-Chairman Michael Bergeron echoed Voisin’s comments. “Time and again, Phyllis Peoples has shown her ability to inspire people and to build the kind of consensus for continued progress any hospital would be proud of. We are delighted that she has accepted our offer and that we can count on her to take the hospital to the next level of service to the community.”

In accepting the appointment as President and CEO, Peoples thanked the Board for its confidence and pledged to “provide the kind of vision and leadership expected of one of the nation’s premier hospitals.” “That vision,” Peoples said, “will focus on continuing to bring world class technology, people and services to TGMC, without losing sight of the daily needs of the local community.”

Mrs. Peoples also stressed her commitment to “honoring the hospital's mission of service to the broadest section of the public, through continued education, communication and respect,” and her determination to make TGMC “an employer of choice for the best and most innovative of prospective employees.”

Peoples is a native of Houma, Louisiana. She is also the recipient of many community-supported awards, including the First Annual Athena Award through the Houma Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce and the LSNA’s Nightingale Award as Nursing Administrator of the year.

She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Masters Degree from Georgia’s Valdosta State University with specializations in Education and Administration, and is in the process of completing a doctorate program from Tulane University. Peoples earned several honors while in school, including the National Collegiate Nursing Award and the All American Scholar Award.

She is married to Michael Peoples, an executive representative for Merck and Company. They are parents of two children, Jacob, age 10, and Mitchell, age 5, both of whom attend St. Francis de Sales Catholic School. Mrs. Peoples is active with community organizations, is a 2002 graduate of Leadership Terrebonne, and continues to be active in several professional healthcare organizations.
