Cancer Care Center
Terrebonne General knows if a patient is going to beat cancer,
he must battle it on every level: emotionally, physically, spiritually,
and mentally. This journey requires a team of highly-skilled medical
staff, compassionate professionals, and an atmosphere of courage
and determination. At TGMC, we are committed to meeting those standards
and supporting our patients and their families.
Our Staff
TGMC's staff of Board-certified oncologists have been trained at
some of the nation's leading cancer-care facilities including Yale,
MD Anderson, Ochsner, and the Mayo Clinic. Our RNs, LPNs, and other
support staff members are specially trained to provide the medical
support and personal encouragement needed by cancer patients during
all stages of the disease.
We Offer Convenience
At TGMC, we consider the patient's family a vital part of our treatment
team. After all, many cancer patients look to their family to gauge
how they are doing. That's why we offer cancer services right here
in Houma. Because many of our patients live some distance from the
main hospital, we've also opened branch clinics capable of providing
the same services in Morgan City and Galliano. This allows our patients
to stay close to home and their family.
We're on the Front Line in the Fight Against
Cancer
Through its participation in the Community Clinical Oncology Program
(CCOP), which is funded by the National Cancer Institute, Terrebonne
General works with groups of doctors and their patients from across
the country to develop new treatments and drugs to fight cancer.
TGMC is currently participating in several studies including:
- National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel
Project;
- North Central Cancer Treatment Group;
- Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group;
- Sarah Cannon Research Network;
- A breast cancer prevention trial using the
drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene;
- A prostate cancer prevention trial to study
the drug finasteride;
- A study to treat cancer anorexia;
- A study to treat cancer pain;
- A colorectal cancer prevention trial studying
the effects of aspirin on colorectal cancer development;
- Treatment studies for brain, breast, gastrointestinal,
gentiourinary, lung, and skin cancer.

We offer support for patients and families
While medical treatment is certainly
necessary in beating cancer, patients must also be given emotional
and spiritual support at this difficult time in their lives. Knowing
this, Terrebonne General has initiated several programs to help
both patients and their families cope with the disease. They include:
- Camp Bluebird - a three-day camp held each
fall that provides recreational therapy for cancer patients;
- Cancer Resource Center - an office for information
and assistance with Medicare/Medicaid eligibility, arranging home
healthcare, financial assistance, dietary information, sexuality,
and chemotherapy education classes;
- Cancer Support Groups - weekly and monthly
support groups for patients and their families including "Bosom
Buddies," a caregiver group;
- Cancer Survivors' Day - an annual event
held on the first Saturday in June to "celebrate life" and recognize
survivors in our region;
- Community Education Programs - "I Can Cope,"
"Tell a Friend," "Aquatic Education" and "Project Choice" are
cancer education programs designed to increase cancer awareness;
- Look Good ... Feel Better! - a program to
help women undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments conceal
hair loss and/or skin problems;
- Reach to Recovery - a service rehabilitation
program offering support for recent mastectomy and lumpectomy
patients;
- Wigs For Hope - a program providing free
wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
treatments.
