Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC), has once again committed to be a partner in the Donate Life Louisiana Hospital Campaign.  TGMC designated the month of April as a 30-day initiative to raise awareness about the critical need for individuals to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Since its initiation in 2008, TGMC has been a partner in the Donate Life Louisiana Hospital Campaign.  The campaign was the first ever statewide hospital donor registration drive initiative in the nation.  During April of 2009, 134 new donors were added to the list.  TGMC achieved its goal for Donate Life Louisiana in 2010 by recruiting 250,000 donors by July of 2010.  Efforts to help reach this goal at TGMC included a Flag Raising ceremony to recognize both donors and recipients families.

In April of 2011, TGMC took the initiative a step further and held a dedication ceremony and unveiled the Wall of Heroes.  The Wall of Heroes features TGMC patients who have given the extraordinary “Gift of Life” as organ donors.  To date there are 67 pictures on the Wall of Heroes.

“TGMC has always played an active role in advocating organ donation. We realize the impact that it has on donor families and recipients. It is because of our passion that we have taken the initiative to construct the Wall of Heroes as a wonderful remembrance of the donors from our community,” said Phyllis Peoples, President and CEO.

The Louisiana Hospital Association (LHA) and the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) launched the Donate Life Louisiana initiative in 2008 to help increase the number of registered organ and tissue donors in the state of Louisiana. The good news is that by the end of 2011, 2 million Louisiana residents have registered to become organ donors, but the new goal for the Donate Life Louisiana campaign is 2.2 million by 2014.

Organ donation is extremely important. In Louisiana 1,800 individuals are waiting for a lifesaving transplant and there over 106,000 individuals waiting throughout the U.S. One donor has the ability to save up to nine lives, restore sight to two people, and enhance the lives of more than 50 people through tissue donation. Over the last ten years TGMC patients that choose organ donation have saved 86 lives. Each tissue donor can possibly enhance the lives of as many as 50 people and TGMC had over 54 tissue donors – that is almost 3,000 people. 44 people were assisted through cornea donation – two people by each cornea donor.

As part of the campaign, the LHA and LOPA are collaborating with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on the Give 5 – Save Lives initiative to provide needed resources and materials to hospitals.

The Donate Life Louisiana Hospital Campaign and the Give 5 – Save Lives initiative are needed because over 100,000 people are waiting for a life saving organ transplant in the U.S., and over 1,800 of them are in Louisiana. An average of 18 people on the national waiting list die every day because no organ is available. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people could benefit from tissue and eye donations.
