TGMC Honored with Mission: Lifeline Achievement Award

06/18/2015

Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) has received the Mission: Lifeline® Silver Receiving Center Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.

TGMC cardiovascular physicians and staff are world-renowned for providing innovative and advanced cardiac care to patients experiencing a heart attack or other cardiac issues. The medical center treats over 2,500 cardiac patients a year and continues to provide the highest quality of care to cardiac patients. TGMC Chest Pain Center was awarded the highest level of accreditation by the internationally recognized Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPS) joining an elite groupof hospitals in the world who have achieved this distinct designation. South Louisiana has the one of the highest incidences of heart disease in the nation, therefore having an accredited chest pain center right here in our community increases patients’ chance of survival.

Each year in the United States, approximately 250,000 people have a STEMI, or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.

TGMC earned the award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for the quick and appropriate treatment of STEMI patients by providing emergency procedures to re-establishblood flow to blocked arteries when needed. Eligible hospitals must adhere to these measures at a set level for a designated period to receive the awards. The AHA’s Mission: Lifeline program’s goalis to reduce system barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning with the 9-1-1 call and continuing through hospital treatment.

“TGMCis dedicated to improving the quality of care for our patients who suffer a heart attack,” said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO of TGMC. “We are pleased to receive this distinguished award and be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care.”

TGMC was presented the Mission: Lifeline Achievement Award on June 18, 2015 alongwith the Gold Resuscitation Award from the American Heart Association.
