Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC Receives Prestigious Oncology Award

08/13/2015

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is the only cancer center in Louisiana to be recognized by the national Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program in 2015.

“We are proud to have achieved QOPI® certification,” said Melanie Guilbeaux, Cancer Center director. “It tells patients that Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is doing everything we can do locally to meet and exceed the national best practices quality assurance guidelines.”

QOPI® is an affiliate of the largest oncology society in the United States, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The QOPI® Certification Program is an initiative launched in 2006 to certify oncology practices that voluntarily meet the rigorous standards for high-quality cancer care. The QOPI® Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet standards for quality cancer care.

“Cancer patients and their families deserve accountability and the highest standards from cancer care providers, “ said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO, Terrebonne General Medical Center. “This certification recognizes the meritorious performance of our Cancer Center team members and places them at the forefront of cancer care in our community."

QOPI® analyzes practice data and compares these to more than 160 different national quality measures that must be met. These measures address the entire patient experience during chemotherapy – from education, safety and psychological/social needs, to pain management, follow-up care and more.

ASCO President Julie M. Vose, MD, stated, “By providing information, quality assessment measures and resources, QOPI helps oncology practices evaluate the quality of care they provide to patients and engage in ongoing quality improvement. Achieving QOPI certification demonstrates a practice’s commitment to quality and safety excellence in the care they deliver to patients.”
