Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC Launches Geaux Pink Program to Fight Breast Cancer

09/26/2012

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC (MBPCC at TGMC) recently launched a new fundraising program called Geaux Pink. Individuals, schools, businesses and sports teams are invited to join the Center in the fight against breast cancer by hosting a Geaux Pink event during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Geaux Pink is a fun and meaningful way to raise awareness about a disease that affects so many,” said Amy Ponson, Director of Development for MBPCC at TGMC.

Louisiana’s breast cancer death rates are among the highest in the nation. This is due to a lack of access to care, delayed diagnosis and treatment, limited educational awareness and low utilization of preventative services.

Last year – in a continuing effort to combat these statistics – nearly 2,000 people were reached through MBPCC at TGMC’s 25 screenings and 13 educational events. One hundred percent of the funds raised through Geaux Pink will help support these early detection and free screening programs as well as breast cancer awareness throughout the Bayou Region.

Examples of a Geaux Pink event include: having a pink lemonade sale, hosting a pink dress down day at school or the office, dedicating a home game and much more. No matter how small or large the event, it can truly make a difference.

“We are excited to introduce this program to the Bayou Region,” Ponson said. “Our community has been very supportive of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC and is eager to give back. I look forward to seeing our community members and organizations come up with great ways to support the fight against cancer.”
