Several community minded volunteers have joined together to form The Foundation for Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC), with their mission being to develop and maintain a comprehensive program of financial giving in the community for the sole purpose of promoting, developing, and expanding the services, functions, purpose, and mission of TGMC in providing exceptional healthcare with compassion. The goals of The Foundation will be to expand healthcare opportunities, utilizing the talent and professionalism at TGMC, for the residents of our area and to nurture and encourage a philanthropic spirit for all.
As an IRS designated 501(C)3 organization, all contributions to the foundations are tax exempt as authorized by law. The organization is currently governed by a nine member, voluntary board who has individually and collectively earned a solid reputation of volunteerism in the community. The Board officers are Mike Fakier, Chair; Dr. Sarah Haydel, Vice-Chair; Arlanda Williams, Secretary; Darrin Guidry, Treasurer; and Dr. Raul Doria, Immediate Past Chair. The Board members are Chuck Weaver, Dr. Anthony Herques, Sharon Bergeron and Mark Lee. Each member possesses a strong belief in the importance of TGMC in this area, both as a leading healthcare facility and as well as an economic hub to the region. “The importance of TGMC to our area in providing excellent healthcare cannot be over emphasized.” said Fakier. “The Foundation hopes to help bolster TGMC’s existing reputation as our region’s largest and leading healthcare facility, thus continuing to assist in attracting new businesses and residents to Terrebonne Parish.”
The initial thrust of The Foundation will be to generate new funds to further the outreach efforts of TGMC. The purchase of an outreach vehicle, which will be equipped to conduct medical screenings and blood drives in the rural areas of Terrebonne Parish, will be the first priority for The Foundation. It is the belief of the Board members that screenings and preventative actions will, in both the short and long term, lessen healthcare costs for individuals in our area and contribute to a healthier population. TGMC President and CEO Phyllis Peoples concurred by saying, “We at TGMC always stress that proper screenings and preventative healthcare are crucial to the physical well being of our population. We are grateful to the volunteers with The Foundation for helping TGMC build and maintain a healthy community.”
The Foundation Board feels that contributors to The Foundation know the priorities in their community and the Board will allow the donors to decide which area of healthcare at TGMC they wish to designate their funds. A person whose life was saved by actions of the superior cardiovascular team at TGMC may wish to contribute to further activities in the cardiovascular department. A couple whose newborn child received excellent treatment in the Women’s Center may wish to allocate funds to continue and expand programs which promote child care for the nearly two thousand babies born at TGMC annually.
The newly designed TGMC Wall of Donors will acknowledge substantial gifts from donors and will be an excellent way of permanently recognizing their contributions to TGMC and the community.
The Foundation will be holding its first fundraising effort that will be open to the public on Thursday, October 4, 2012. Funds generated from this event will go to help defray the cost of the purchase of the outreach medical vehicle.
