The History of Terrebonne General Health System

For 70 years, Terrebonne General Health System has provided world-class, compassionate health care to the people in our community. When Terrebonne General first opened its doors in 1954, the hospital had 76 beds and fewer than 80 people on staff. Today, we have grown into a 321-bed, nationally recognized, award-winning facility with more than 1,500 employees and 450 medical staff providers—the largest community hospital in the Tri-Parish region.

Terrebonne General has expanded through the years, as its community’s needs continued to grow, by offering significantly expanded medical services. Our cardiology services are world-renowned, with procedures and modern research performed by some of the best cardiologists in the world. Our comprehensive Women’s Health Center was voted the Bayou's Best birthing facility for two consecutive years, and Terrebonne General | Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has brought specialized comprehensive cancer care to our community. The physicians and staff have birthed over 92,839 little miracles, mended 136,413 broken hearts, provided over 1,409,000 emergency department visits, and set over 250,154 fractured limbs. Terrebonne General’s commitment to exceptional care continues, as evidenced by the outstanding doctor/patient relationships, with 96% of Terrebonne General patients saying that the physicians communicate well.

Our Healthy Lifestyles Center further shows our ability to care for the health and wellness of our community by providing existing services in one convenient location, including Wellness for Life, Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation, Diabetes Management, Weight Management, the Performance Training Center, and the Community Sports Institute. The Terrebonne General Community Sports Institute plays a considerable role in developing health and wellness in our community through their work with student athletes. Our Community Sports Institute partners with our local schools, ensuring that certified athletic trainers are on staff to provide student athletes with the resources they need to properly prevent and triage injuries, starting on the field and staying with them every step of the way. To date, we have partnered with over 13,800 students in our parish.

Years ago, The Foundation for Terrebonne General Health System, the philanthropic arm of our hospital, was created by several community-minded volunteers to provide a means for our community to provide financial giving. Since that time, our committed community partners have embraced the opportunity to further the efforts of our hospital by having a chance to partner with us to give back to our community, and we truly appreciate their exceptional support of this program.
